My black friend, you are always there.

Holding me back and keeping me down.

Like an old owl stare.

Or a head teacher's frown.

Oppressed and depressed.

Upsets and forgets

The joy and the humor

You are my tumor

My Cancer that grows

Deep from within

But your existence slows

And your skin grows thin

You can't hold me down

For my light will shine

And light up my town

You will become benign

The ghosts of the past

Follow us in the now

In life, it went too fast

They long to touch, but they know not how.

That shaded corner of the room

A feeling of them watching us

Darkness that seems to loom

Our nostrils smell the musk

We know you are there

Just out of sight

No matter how long we stare

You never come to the light

Are you the monster under my bed

Or in the cupboard locked away

Is it fear you long to be fed

Or can it be the love you miss each day

Have I got you all so wrong

Could it be you want me so

Because of the bond, we had for so long

Are here to see me grow

I DON'T KNOW YOUR NAME

PASSING IN THE STREET

YOU WALK ON BY

IT MIGHT SEEM LAME

A MOMENT SO FLEET

COULD BE A LIE

YOU WON'T FEEL THE SAME

NO DESIRE TO MEET

BUT I SAW IN YOUR EYE

A BURNING FLAME

COULD FEEL YOUR HEAT

A PHOENIX BUSTING TO FLY
